Why SecuriSync, Part II: Selective Sync
We built SecuriSync to solve the business file syncing and sharing concerns that consumer-grade solutions aren’t addressing. This blog series dives into some of the top scenarios where SecuriSync provides a unique solution. Read part one here.
Selective Sync: for syncing what you want, where you want it.
Are you suffering from file overload? Before I started using SecuriSync, I certainly was. Every day more files were shared with me, and every day I had less hard drive space.
Most file-sharing services allow you to sync all your files across all your devices. But not every file needs to be on every device—and, in fact, not every file needs to be stored locally.
A business user shouldn’t have to decide between files you want and space on your computer. SecuriSync’s Selective Sync feature solves this problem.
Selective Sync lets you decide which files to sync to your machine. For all the rest, SecuriSync stores them in the cloud, where they wait for you until you’re ready for them.
(Selective Sync only works for Windows users right now. Mac support is coming soon.)
There are hundreds of use-cases for this feature. Here are a few examples:
- Maybe you’re in marketing, and your design team is constantly uploading massive high-res graphic files. You may need them some day, but you don’t need them every day. So why waste space on them?
- Maybe you just returned from a company retreat, and everyone is uploading their photos. These will be great memories in a couple years—but do you want them on your computer until you’re ready to see them?
- Maybe you’re migrating a legacy file server to SecuriSync. You could give your entire company access to the whole thing without using up space on anyone’s machine.
Here’s how it works
Every time you receive a new folder share, you can select your syncing preferences right in the “accept” dialogue. If you’re using Windows, you can accept the share without syncing the files.
Folder owners can also set the syncing preference before sharing with other collaborators.
To access Selective Sync settings, Windows users can right-click on the SecuriSync icon in the Windows task bar and select “settings”.
Once you’re at the settings, it’s simple to select which folders you want to sync to your desktop, and which ones you want to store in the cloud.
How do you find the file you want?
Here’s a question you might be asking: if only some of your files are stored locally, how do you find the file you need? This is where the power of full text search (the subject of Why SecuriSync, Part I) comes into play.
Just log into your SecuriSync web portal and search for the keywords you’re looking for. Our full text search engine will look inside every file, regardless of whether it’s synced locally or stored in the cloud, and instantly return the results across all your files.
