You can’t kill email

You see it every day. Some new hot app that’s going to change the way we do business…or the way we schedule our day-to-day lives…or the way we communicate with those around us. And then someone makes a big proclamation that this technology will surely be the one — the one that finally puts the nail in email’s coffin.

Could that really be true? I’m not so sure. And neither is Intermedia CTO Jonathan Levine.

You can’t kill email

Jonathan Levine shares his perspective on this very topic on TechCrunch. And for him, email is not going anywhere anytime soon.

One of my favorite quotes from the piece calls out this insistence that every new hot communication technology is going to displace email:

“The makers of these new collaboration tools call email a “legacy” technology — unwarrantedly trying to tarnish its image. But, in fact, all of us rely on email heavily throughout the work week. Contrary to what is often suggested in the press, email usage is still very much on the rise. Users trust it, are familiar with it and leverage it all day, every day, in their business and personal lives.”

The reality is that email has unique properties that no other technology possesses — it’s asynchronous, reliable, multimedia and a multi-device tool. And even as it evolves to accommodate the new ways in which we do business and interact with others, it is very much an integral part of the way we communicate today.
