The University of Portland (U.P.) is a private Catholic university nestled atop Waud’s Bluff overlooking Oregon’s Willamette River. Ranked in the top ten for western regional universities by U.S. News & World Report – the university faced the same challenges as many growing organizations.


The school’s IT department had turned to the cloud to help manage their online student and faculty services. As the number of apps they deployed continued to grow – cloud sprawl quickly became an issue.

With 5,000 students and faculty averaging 10 apps per user, managing and provisioning access had become a logistical nightmare. The IT department was using an open source Central Authentication Server (CAS) to centrally manage their apps – but with each new app they added came an additional $2,000-$5,000 in software integration fees PLUS 3-4 weeks of testing and development.
