Partners: Improve your ranking in search results with these simple tips

Here’s an experiment. Go to Google and search for the following: <your biggest product> <your city>. If your competitors’ sites come up before yours do, then it might be time to evaluate your search engine optimization (SEO) strategy.

“But I get my leads through word-of-mouth,” one Intermedia partner recently told us. “What do I need SEO for?” Well, ask the MSP or VAR that IS appearing as #1 in the search results. All the search-driven business is probably going to them.

We get it. You only have so much time, and you’d much rather be closing deals and helping customers. But SEO doesn’t have to take up much time. A few small changes can make a huge difference.

We recently teamed up with digital marketing agency Add3, which has worked with the likes of Costco and Amazon Web Services, to outline crucial steps you can take to boost your ranking in search results.

For the biggest companies, SEO is highly strategic and highly complex. “But, many smaller businesses have overlooked such basic elements of SEO as page titles, XML sitemaps, tagging of keywords on the page, etc.,” says Justin Snider of Add3. “A few hours of work on their site can make a big difference in their results.”

Here are three of them:

  1. Think local: Including your location in prominent areas of the site improves localized search opportunities. Include city name in the title tag, add individual pages for office locations and link to your Yelp page. Key takeaway: Google tailors search results based on geography.
  2. Optimize your “Title” and “Meta” tags: Title tags are used to describe the title of each web page and meta tags are used to describe the page itself. Why does this matter? Search engines search by these keywords and deliver results based on them. To optimize the results page of each search, make sure the title tags and meta descriptions that are used on each page are unique, descriptive of the content and make use of your keywords. Most importantly, avoid using the same title tags for every page and never the meta description empty.Key takeaway: every page needs different descriptive tags.
  3.  Make friendly URLs: Use actual keywords in URLs vs. long strings of randomized letters/numbers. Build up authority on important topics by having directories that hold multiple pieces of content. Key takeaway: URLs should describe relationships and be readable by humans.
