Since 1927, ESBA has been leading the way to ensure individuals and families affected by disabilities can live, learn, work and play to their full potential. ESBA provides Applied Behavior Analysis as well as Speech, Occupational and Physical Therapy services in home and community-based settings; ESBA also provides Early Intervention services for children under the age of three, and has an afterschool program called Kaleidoscope in Dublin.
Demand for behavioral health services at ESBA grew astronomically after they became covered by insurance in 2012. The affiliate’s revenues have increased from $10 million to a projected $85 million by the end of 2015, and the number of employees has expanded from approximately 100 to more than 600.
Robert Van Tuyl joined ESBA in January of 2013 as Vice President of Technology. He currently serves as Chief Innovation Officer overseeing technology services, security, marketing, and social media. His mission: Transform ESBA and its network of providers to meet the demands for all of ESBA’s services while setting the industry standard for providing high-quality, evidence-based clinical services in a compliant, secure, and cost-effective way, resulting in the highest levels of customer satisfaction in the industry. To accomplish this mission, Robert wanted to build out a scalable and secure technology infrastructure that could support ESBA’s rapid growth in a HIPAA-compliant environment while ensuring high levels of support and reliability.

With rapid growth in the organization, one of his first priorities was to stabilize secure email communications.
“We required systems that would prevent email outages, adhere to regulatory compliance requirements and secure email communication standards,” said Van Tuyl, describing why they chose Intermedia’s Exchange Email. “And we required a scalable, cost-effective Exchange environment.”
With the assistance of Intermedia’s Cloud Concierge™ team, ESBA migrated from an on-premises Exchange environment to Intermedia’s Exchange Email. The transition was completed in a matter of weeks with minimal impact to the end-users. Employees were extremely satisfied with the unlimited storage feature and always-on availability of email.
As the use of the ESBA cloud-based and on-premise applications grew with financials, CRM, electronic medical records, and other mission-critical business systems across multiple vendors, ESBA’s technology team faced the challenge of managing access and authentication for a growing number of users.
The IT department considered a variety of single sign-on solutions and concluded that standalone products would require adding a new vendor as well as learning new management tools and administration consoles.
With the current growth, ESBA didn’t have time for long deployments or learning curves for their technology team or users. To address these challenges, ESBA turned to Intermedia’s Single Sign-On solution, Intermedia AppID Enterprise.
“We wanted a service that would be able to scale with us as well as integrate with our Exchange environment seamlessly, with minimal disruption for our employees’ IT experience,” said Van Tuyl. “Since our system administrators were already familiar with the Intermedia portal, adding Intermedia AppID Enterprise required minimal training. We can manage users and user identities in the same interface.”
Intermedia AppID Enterprise supports SAML 2.0 and is pre-integrated with a long list of third-party apps.
Intermedia was also able to sign a Business Associate Agreement for HIPAA compliance—which is a fundamental requirement for healthcare providers such as ESBA.
